WFB Welcomes New Teachers and Staff

There were many new hires in the Whitefish Bay School District and to get to know some of them AFE asked some fun questions. Here are their answers:

Name: Mary Aussem
Staff position: School Counselor
Years of experience: 19 (13 as a school counselor, 6 as high school registrar) Favorite subject to learn about: World cultures/travel, human interest stories Favorite thing to do to relax: Spending time with family, hiking/walking & cycling – or essentially anything outside!
One fun or unusual fact about you: I grew up in WFB and my parents still live in the same house. 45 years and counting!

Name: Twila Bergeron
Staff position: Elementary Music at Cumberland and Richards
Years of experience: 25 (most of those years were in Fox Point Bayside)
Favorie subject to teach: Music
Favorite subject to learn about: World Religions. I once considered becoming a Unitarian Universalist minister
Favorite thing to do to relax: Sailing (my husband and I are avid sailors) We sail our beloved sailboat Sweet Dreams on Lake Michigan well into autumn.
One fun or unusual fact about you: In addition to teaching music, I’m a performer. I played Summerfest 2015 every day as a soloist and I also lead a traditional country swing band called “TJ and the Blue Roots.”

Name: Jean Buchen
Staff position: ELL teacher
Years of experience: 20 years
Favorite subject to learn about: I love reading about best practices in teaching. Favorite thing to do to relax: Biking is a favorite pastime for me.
One fun or unusual fact: Recently moved back to Wisconsin after living in California for many years to be closer to family.

Name: Kari Burden
Staff position: High School Yoga and Health teacher
Years of experience: 13 years teaching Health and PE in IL
Favorite subject to teach: Both Health and Yoga – my dream job!
Favorite subject to learn about: Anything about the human body and mind
Favorite thing to do to relax: Being outside instantly relaxes me
One fun or unusual fact about you: I walked 500 miles across France and Spain 3 years ago.

Name: Sarah Burling
Staff position: Speech and Language Pathologist
Years of experience: 3
Favorite subject to teach: Language development
Favorite thing to do: Snowboard or run One fun or unusual fact about you: I am getting married in mid-October!

Name: Christina Cattey
Staff position: Math and Science teacher at the HS
Years of experience: 4 (spent last 4 years at St. Francis HS)
If teaching, favorite subject to teach: Chemistry because I love helping students see why things happen in the world
Favorite subject to learn about: Math (math modeling in college was awesome!)
Favorite thing to do to relax: Play with my kids (although that isn’t too relaxing usually)
One fun or unusual fact about you: I grew up racing sailboats and have traveled the country with my one-person dinghy

Name: Jean Christiaansen
Staff position: WFBHS Attendance and Athletic Secretary
Years of School experience: 8 years in the public sector
What is your favorite part of being a secretary? I love being part of a busy office and getting to know the kids. Favorite thing to do to relax: I relax by walking my dog and Yoga
One fun or unusual fact about you: My husband and I love to ride our Harley Davidson Road King every chance we get.

Name: Emily Fischer
Staff Position: 7th/8th Grade Science T eacher
Years of Experience: This is my first job! I have one year of student teaching experience in the Madison area. Favorite Subject to Teach: I love teaching science, and have always had a particular interest in Biology and Anatomy.
Favorite Subject to Learn about: Similar to the last question, my favorite subject to learn about is anatomy. I think the human body is so interesting and have always enjoyed learning about how our body systems interact.
Favorite thing to do to relax: I love trying out new recipes for meals or treats in my free time!
Fun Fact: I am originally from Grafton, and happy to be back in this area!

Staff position: Special Education Teacher
Years of experience: 3
Favorite subject to teach: Science Favorite subject to learn about: Social Studies
Favorite thing to do to relax: Anything outside
One fun or unusual fact about you: I am learning to play the guitar

Name: Allison Grzesik
Staff position: Math Teacher, Whitefish Bay High School
Years of experience: 1 (1 year at St Joseph’s in Kenosha, WI)
What is your favorite part of being a teacher? I enjoy building
relationships with the students and getting to know them on a more personal level, not just as students.
Favorite thing to do to relax: I enjoy being active by playing volleyball, bike riding, and kayaking
One fun or unusual fact about you: I have two different colored eyes!

Name: Erin Jex
Staff position: high school math (Algebra and Advanced Geometry) Years of experience: 14
Favorite subject to teach: Any math class!
Favorite subject to learn about: I love to learn about space and our solar system
Favorite thing to do to relax: Go on walks with my kids
One fun or unusual fact about you: I am a 1994 grad of WFB high school!

Name: Jen Justman
Staff position: 5th grade teacher Years of experience: 12 years (as a middle school math teacher)
Favorite subject to teach: I LOVE teaching math

spending time with family and friends
One fun or unusual fact about you: I played in a 24+ hour kickball game to try to get in the Guinness Book of World Records

Name: Rebecca Killen
Staff position: Art Teacher, part time Years of experience:4 years
Favorite subject to teach: ART! 🙂 (Drawing and painting are my fortes) Favorite subject to learn about: This is constantly changing! I love learning, so it’s kinda whatever else is going on in my life that I want to learn more about. Favorite thing to do to relax: Meditate. Yes, seriously! Besides the health benefits, after having 3 small children and let’s face it, school can get noisy, I really appreciate the silence.
One fun or unusual fact about you: I didn’t go straight to college after graduating high school. I spent a year and half traveling Europe before coming back to study Art Education. I spent most of my time in Berlin, Germany and speak fluent German because of it!

Name: Shelley Lautenschlager
Staff position: Transition Specialist. I am responsible for assisting high school SPED students prepare for their post secondary lives. This is a new position for me. I’m enjoying the challenges and the many connections I have made in the community. It’s great to be back atthe high school. I really enjoy the vibe and energy of high schoolers.
Years of experience: WOW, I just received my 25 year recognition award this past August. I’ve been so fortunate to have worked in all of the schools in WFB School District. I’ve enjoyed each and every position I’ve held.
Favorite thing to do to relax: My favorite activity is knitting. I really enjoy incorporating any cable pattern into a sweater. Another technique I really enjoy is a challenging fair isle sweater pattern. One fun or unusual fact about you: My husband Steve and I both love to travel. However, lately that has been confined to visiting Colorado where our adult kids, Lauren and Bradley currently live.

Name: Sarah Merigold
Staff position: Physical Education T eacher
Years of experience: 4 in PE, 38 in life Favorite subject to teach: PE of course!
Favorite subject to learn about: Brain Plasticity
Favorite thing to do to relax: Playing board games and cards with my family. One fun or unusual fact about you: I’ve ridden in the original Ghostbusters car Ecto 1!

Name: Nicole Miller
Staff position: First Grade Teacher Years of experience: I have taught two years of 4K, four years of 5K,and this is my first year teaching first grade. Favorite subject to teach: My favorite subjects to teach are reading and writing.
Favorite subject to learn about: I enjoy learning about everything. There is always room to learn more!
Favorite thing to do to relax: When I need to relax, I turn to a good book or go to Pilates class.
One fun or unusual fact about you: I love to wakeboard and snowboard.

Name: Tiwana Mueller
Staff position: Special Ed. Paraprofessional
Years of experience: 7 years
Favorite subject to learn about: New ways to learn how to modify work for the special ed. population and coming up with new techniques on how to motivate students
Favorite thing to do to relax: I like to watch movies, cook and bake.
One fun or unusual fact about you: I studied French from k4 all the way through senior year in high school.

Favorite thing to do to relax: Work on my family’s dairy farm

Name: Adam Reynolds

One fun or unusual fact about you: I got my start as an educator teaching martial arts through a club at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

One fun or unusual fact about you: I was born and raised in Wisconsin but I am a Cubs and Bears fan.

Staff position: Algebra teacher

Name: Sarah Robinson
Staff position: Whitefish Bay High School Spanish Teacher
Years of experience: 24 (24 years as a Spanish Teacher, including 8 years of half-day Spanish Teacher and half-day High School Counselor)
Favorite subject to teach: I love teaching Spanish, as it creates an opportunity for students to develop their communication skills and increase their cultural awareness.
Favorite subject to learn about: Ecotourism and health/ wellness Favorite thing to do to relax: Take a walk outside, go for a bike ride, or go kayaking on the Milwaukee River
One fun or unusual fact about you: I enjoyed coaching cross country and track for 20 years.

Name: Tamara Safer
Staff position: Junior Kindergarten T eacher
Years of experience: This is my second year teaching and my second year in Junior Kindergarten.
Favorite subject to teach: I love teaching science in Junior Kindergarten! Children at this age are so excited about learning, as well as exceptionally curious, observant, and in awe of the world around them.
Favorite subject to learn about: Science/Nature
Favorite thing to do to relax: I love cooking, gardening, and hiking with my dogs.
One fun or unusual fact about you: I have been working on writing and illustrating my own children’s books and hope to publish one in the near future.

Name: Maggie Schiel
Staff position: German teacher
Years of experience: 6
Favorite subject to teach: To me, all levels are German are fun to teach. In the lower levels, students are so excited about learning new vocabulary and culture. In the upper levels, students have the knowledge of the language to be more creative and have more in depth conversations.
Favorite subject to learn about: I think science is very interesting. I love watching shows on the Discovery or Science channels.
Favorite thing to do to relax: I enjoy knitting and baking cupcakes.
One fun or unusual fact about you: My husband proposed to me at the top of the Cologne Cathedral in Germany.

Name: Jon Schneider
Staff position: PE/ Health Teacher Years of experience: 6

Favorite subject to learn about: Exercise Physiology and Nutrition
Favorite thing to do to relax: Play basketball
One fun or unusual fact about you: Played basketball with Wes Matthews at a clinic

Name: Christine Stelman

One fun or unusual fact about you: I grew up in Minnesota.

Name: Elissa Suechting
Staff position: Library Media Specialist, Whitefish Bay High School Years of experience: 8 years in education (2 years special education, 6 years Cumberland library)
What is your favorite part of being a librarian? Talking with students about the books they are reading and hearing their excitement about a character, an author, or a story. Favorite thing to do to relax: Read outside
One fun or unusual fact about you: I’ve never read Harry Potter, despite my years as a children’s librarian. I am waiting until my son is old enough to experience the series for the first time with him.

Name: Caroline Tauscher
Staff position: First Grade Teacher
Years of experience: 15 years
Favorite subject to teach: ALL- teaching is my passion
Favorite subject to learn about: Math
Favorite thing to do to relax: Going to a Bucks, Brewers, or Packers Game with my family 🙂
One fun or unusual fact about you: I worked as a Lancome make-up artist for almost 20 years.

Name: Brianna Vollmer
Staff position: Senior Kindergarten Teacher
Years of experience: 0 (new graduate from UW Oshkosh!!)
Favorite subject to teach: Depends on the unit–Science can be super fun, but usually Literacy because I LOVE reading.
Favorite subject to learn about: Certain periods of history and different cultures’ holidays/customs (Dia de Los Muertos, for example)
Favorite thing to do to relax: Read (working on some F. Scott Fitzgerald novels right now), spend time at my family’s lake home
One fun or unusual fact about you: I love to travel. One of my bucket list items is visit all 50 states. I have visited 13 and driven through a total of 20 so far. Tennessee and South Carolina were my favorites. One trip even led to hot air ballooning over a desert in Arizona!

Name: Margaret West
Staff position: Secretary – Guidance Department
Years of experience: 20+ years of professional experience in the following: Corporate Trainer, Project Manager and Administrative Assistant

Favorite thing to do to relax: cook
One fun or unusual fact about you: I completed my first walking marathon in Dublin, Ireland in 1998.
